If you are considering a Rhinoplasty, aka Nose Job, you may be concerned that you won’t look like yourself after surgery. We get it and I think it is completely understandable. When you consider examples of this surgery in popular culture, most of the things that pop into your head aren’t good. If someone has a Rhinoplasty surgery and the appearance of their face is drastically changed, then the surgery was not approached correctly. A bad Rhinoplasty is obvious to everyone, not just to people like me who do this for a living. There are exceptions to this rule obviously. When it comes to people who have had serious injuries involving their nose, drastic transformations are needed. Also, some people are born with misshapen noses and they need fairly aggressive surgeries. But in the high majority of cases, a Rhinoplasty should be subtle, natural and augment the rest of your face. It should fit in with the rest of your features and after surgery your nose should look like you. As this is a surgery of millimeters, not inches it should be approached carefully and with a definitive plan.
So how can you make sure you look like yourself after Rhinoplasty surgery? Here are a few tips:
Seek out a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon who specializes in this surgery. In our office, we pride ourselves in our results and we consider Rhinoplasty surgery as one of our primary specialties. This is one of the most complex surgeries offered in Plastic Surgery so you really need to seek out a specialist with a lot of experience. It really makes a difference.
Make sure you talk with your surgeon a lot before surgery and ensure that his or her plan is in line with what you want to address. Rhinoplasty surgery is really complex. Because of this complexity, patients can get confused and not fully understand the surgical plan. In our office, we spend a lot of time with our patients, breaking down the surgery plan, making sure we are on the same page. Knowing what to address in the operating room really does affect the outcome.
Less is more. I say this a lot but it really holds true with Rhinoplasty Surgery. You need to take a conservative approach in order to avoid having results that appear “surgical”. This takes some restraint from both you and your surgeon. Make sure that boundaries are established preoperatively so that surprises don’t pop up afterwards.
Optimize your health. I can perform a perfect surgery but the results can be suboptimal if the patient hasn’t focused on their health. Smoking, drinking, injuries and stress around the time of surgery can all affect the outcome. In our clinic, we spend a lot of time educating our patients on health optimization for surgery and during recovery. We have a recovery plan that is comprehensive, yet flexible. Take time before surgery to ensure that you are doing everything you can for the best outcome.
