Liposuction: Recovery 411

Liposuction is a great way to address those frustrating pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. It is truly a powerful procedure with one of the highest satisfaction rates among our patients.  But Liposuction is not without its challenges. It is important for anyone considering Liposuction to know that it does have an extended recovery when compared to other surgeries that we offer. Most notably, it has the longest lasting discomfort and you can be sore to touch in the treatment area for weeks or even a few months.  This is manageable but it can be a nuisance, especially when you want to return to normal work out activities. Recovery times do vary from person to person but in general, it takes up to 1 week to return to non physical work duties, around 2 weeks to return to normal daily activities 6 to 8 weeks to return to your normal workout schedule.  Discomfort after this surgery varies greatly depending on the number of areas that are treated and your individual pain tolerance.  Fortunately, we have many tricks to help you feel more comfortable during recovery.  This includes the use of local anesthesia during surgery and pain medications, muscle relaxants and compression garments after surgery. Cryotherapy and our IR sauna also offer great ways to reduce pain and inflammation. Our comprehensive post operative pain regimen will ensure that you will recover quickly while avoiding prolonged use of pain medications.

A few things you need to know about our approach to a Liposuction:

  1. What we treat: almost any area of the body (including the chin/neck) with excess fat can be treated with liposuction.  By utilizing the newest Liposuction techniques and assisted energy devices like BodyTite, we target your areas of concern.  Liposuction can often be completed with you awake in the office, decreasing downtime and risks associated with general anesthesia.

  2. Combination procedures:  Liposuction is a great add-on to other surgeries to maximise your results. Removing excess fat on the side and flanks will make your Tummy Tuck even better and Neck Lifts look more refined with a bit of chin liposuction to really define the jawline.

  3. Skin tightening:  Liposuction alone is great for removing fat but does little to address loose skin. The severity of your loose skin will dictate the best treatment. Options include energy assisted technology like BodyTite, FaceTite, AccuTite, or Morpheus8 that can be done in the office or combining liposuction with formal surgery as discussed above.
