Fat Grafting, the alternative to Breast Implants

Making your breasts larger by using your own fat may sound too good to be true but this is not a plastic surgery urban myth, it’s reality! Fat grafting to the breasts is gaining in popularity as technology advances and more women are seeking a natural alternative to breast augmentation with silicone or saline breast implants.  And it makes sense: if you can avoid using a breast implant, why wouldn’t you?

Fat grafting to your breasts has a number of advantages over traditional breast augmentation with breast implants. First, it is a 100% natural way to enhance your breasts as it doesn't rely on foreign material to increase your breast size. Using your own fat eliminates many of the risks that are associated with breast implants including capsular contracture, breast implant illness, and implant rupture. The added bonus is you also get to reduce unwanted fat from areas that respond well to liposuction like your belly, hips, thighs, or back. It’s a win-win!

Another advantage of fat grafting is that the outcomes are more natural when compared with standard breast augmentation. Silicone or saline breast implants have the tendency to distort the shape of your breasts, resulting in variations in the size and shape of your breasts after surgery.  Fat grafting gives your surgeon more precise control over volume placement allowing him or her to focus on the areas of your breast that need it most.

It is important to note that fat grafting to the breast does have limitations.  Some of the re-injected fat cells may not survive the transfer and will be reabsorbed by your body over time.  If done correctly, you can expect around 50-60% of the fat injected to survive. Therefore you may need to have additional fat grafting procedures in the future to maintain or improve your results.  Fat grafting alone will not correct breasts that droop or sag, aka ptosis.  Combining fat grafting with a breast lift is a great option to address volume loss and laxity.  Lastly, fat grafting is limited in terms of how much it can increase the size of your breasts. Generally, it is possible to increase about ½-1 cup size.

To optimize our results, we use BeautiFill for fat transfer. This device, manufactured by Alma Laser, uses a 1470-nm laser to assist with gentle liposuction and ensures that the fat removed is viable and optimal for lasting fat transfer. The video below shows the transformation of our patient who wanted the removal of her heavy and ruptured implants, a breast lift, and fat transfer to the breasts.
